Chances are that when you think of Australia’s Gold Coast, the first things that pop into your mind are the beautiful beaches and golden sands during the summer – but what you may not know is that there’s plenty to see on the Gold Coast during winter as well! Sunshine, warm days, clear blue skies and mild nights. Say hello to winter on the Gold Coast. In “winter”, the Gold Coast generally sees less rain, the mercury hits an average of 21°C (70°F) and with 300 days of sunshine per year, the fun in the sun continues year round.
When it comes to family-friendly activities that can be enjoyed all year round, the Gold Coast certainly doesn’t disappoint. Even though the beaches might be too chilly to visit in winter to 21.5 – 22.6°C (70.7 – 72.7°F), there are still plenty of exciting attractions available to keep you and your family entertained.
Hike & Explore
With the drop in humidity, soaring temperatures and crowds the Gold Coast often sees in summer, there’s no better time to explore the hinterland. With hikes of all lengths and difficulties, leading to some of Australia’s most spectacular hidden treasures, there’s plenty of nature experiences to be enjoyed.
Whale Season
Winter is peak whale season, and the Gold Coast’s seaside location offers some of the best vantage points. As hundreds of humpback whales migrate north, including the famous white whale Migaloo, you’re guaranteed to see at least one during winter. You can even take your holiday to the next level and get up close and personal with these gentle giants of the sea on a Whale Watching tour.
Events
There are so many free events happening this season. Head to Burleigh Heads on 22 June for a free, family-friendly community event. The Gold Coast’s Burleigh Winter Solstice Festival is back with live music, fire performers, street entertainment, lantern workshops, BMX and skateboarding demos, local food and drinks, stalls and so much more. Check out more free events and what’s happening on the Gold Coast City Council Calendar.
