Australia Day Celebrations
January 26th is Australia Day. What is Australia Day you ask? For most Aussies, it is a day off work, a reason to get out the old BBQ and have a few too many beers. Most Aussies venture to a nearby backyard, beach or park with an Esky and a radio to tune into the nation’s favourite radio music countdown. It is also a day to celebrate the multicultural identity of Australia as a nation, commemorating the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain.
On Australia Day we celebrate all the things we love about Australia: land, sense of fair go, lifestyle, democracy, the freedoms we enjoy but particularly our people.
Australia Day is about acknowledging and celebrating the contribution that every Australian makes to our contemporary and dynamic nation. From our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people – who have been here for more than 65,000 years – to those who have lived here for generations, to those who have come from all corners of the globe to call our country home.
The marking of 26 January is an important date in Australia’s history and has changed over time: starting as a celebration for emancipated convicts and evolving into what is now a celebration of Australia that reflects the nation’s diverse people.
If you are lucky enough to be in Australia for the country’s favourite public holiday – then you are in for a treat! Here’s our guide to what’s happening on the Gold Coast this Australia Day:
Broadwater Parklands Festival & Fireworks
Be part of the celebrations that unite our nation at the Gold Coast Australia Day event at Broadwater Parklands.
Spend the day soaking up the sun then head to the Broadwater Parklands from 4pm and fill up from the all-nations food truck feast.
The event will feature a bunch of local music talent including sets from The Twine, Sunset City and Cheap Fakes, and the kids are sure to enjoy the JJ Richards Adventure Zone.
This free event kicks off at 4pm and concludes at 8pm with a spectacular fireworks display, set to rival New Year’s Eve. The colourful presentation will feature new live performance components not seen before at this event. Crowds will be wowed by fly boards, jet skis and jetpacks, while the fantastic fireworks light up across the Broadwater.
Pack your picnic rug and gather your family and friends for a wonderful afternoon of food, fun and spectacular fireworks.
